The Role of Government

It is time for Americans - Democratic Americans and Republican Americans - to take their eyes off Russia and the October, 1917, revolution. It is wholly unlikely that we will go that route. We will continue to pay lip service to privately owned property and the profit-motive in place of the bayonet as an incentive to produce. But the control and the profits, if not the actual management of property will be gradually - and stealthily - taken from its owners and gathered into the hands of bureaucrats. For some time we will continue to call it American, but it will become a species of Nazism.

Member of Congress (D-Indiana)

KENNEDY: Only Business Can Create Prosperity

If American business does not earn sufficient revenues to earn a fair profit, this Government cannot earn sufficient revenues to cover its outlays. If American business does not prosper and expand, this Government cannot make good its pledges of economic growth.

John F. Kennedy, Speech to the US Chamber of Commerce
April 30, 1962

CLINTON: Only Government Can Create Prosperity

Q. Mr. President, San Diegans just don't have any more money to contribute to the coffers of Government. My question is, can you name one country that has ever taxed and spent itself back into prosperity?

PRESIDENT CLINTON: The answer to your question is, I can't. ...I will also tell you that all of our major competitors imposed tax levies at higher rates than we do, and they manage to grow rather briskly.
